What is consciousness? How does it work? Can consciousness be expanded? This facilitated workshop allows you to experiment with mind tools that allow reflection on the most human and mysterious of experiences; the awareness of your awareness in what is called “the ever-present now”. The problem with consciousness is that it is used to reflect upon itself thereby changing itself – it’s somewhat like a hand drawing itself or lifting yourself up by your bootstraps. There are tricks, stories and ideas to help you in your exploration.
We look at various useful models and ideas from neuroscience, consciousness science, philosophy, spirituality and metaphysics that enable you to engage the mind’s remarkable multimedia ability to represent the outside world in what appears to be real-time. But the outside world may not be as you think it to be. Here are some areas that we’ll explore in this workshop:
- Models of consciousness. How does consciousness work? How can it be expanded?
- What are some different states of consciousness and how they are accessed?
- What is awareness? To what extent are you aware of your awareness?
- What the role of mind altering molecules and brain chemistry in consciousness?
- Simulation hypothesis; how can you tell that you’re in a simulation and what to do about if you are?
- Language use and experience – stories, metaphors, memes
- How is ‘reality’ storified and how can it be restorified?
- Tools and practice for consciousness expansion and using all of your selves well
- Augmented reality, AI and consciousness in the 21st century
- The emerging field of consciousness science – where’s it going?
